Cloudy glassware out of a dishwasher is two entirely different problems that look identical on the shelf, and the difference decides whether you can fix it or only prevent it. Mineral and detergent film sits on top of the glass and comes off. Etching is microscopic damage to the glass surface itself, and nothing removes it — the glass is permanently changed. One five-minute test separates them, and it is worth doing before you buy anything, change detergent, or start blaming the machine.

Step by step
Do the vinegar test
Take an affected glass and stand it in white vinegar for a few minutes, or soak a cloth in vinegar and hold it against the cloudy area. Rinse and look. If the cloudiness has gone or noticeably faded, it is mineral or detergent film and everything below will help. If the glass looks exactly the same, it is etched, and no product will restore it — the rest of this guide becomes about protecting the glassware you still have rather than rescuing what is already damaged.
Find out how hard your water actually is
This is the single most useful number in the whole problem and most people are guessing at it. Buy a strip test, or ask your water utility for the hardness figure for your supply — public systems publish it. Hard water leaves mineral deposits on everything the machine rinses; very soft water combined with too much detergent is what causes etching. You cannot dose detergent sensibly without knowing which end of that range you are on, and the answer costs nothing to obtain.
Get the rinse aid dispenser filled and set
Rinse aid is a surfactant that makes water sheet off surfaces instead of standing in droplets, and droplets are exactly where mineral film is deposited as they dry. Fill the dispenser, and check the adjustment setting — most machines have a dial or a menu option, and it can be turned right down. If your machine has been running empty of rinse aid because someone assumed the all-in-one tablets covered it, filling it will visibly change your results on the next load.
Dose detergent for your water, not by habit
Detergent dose is where both faults come from. In hard water, too little detergent leaves minerals to deposit as film. In soft water, too much detergent is corrosive to glass over hundreds of cycles and is a direct cause of etching. Start from the dose your detergent recommends for your hardness band and adjust from there. If you are on soft water and using a full tablet for lightly soiled loads, that is worth reconsidering — a tablet cannot be dosed down, so a powder or gel gives you the control.
Check the incoming water temperature
Detergent needs heat to dissolve and to do its work, and undissolved detergent leaves residue on everything. Run the kitchen hot tap until it is hot, catch the water in a cup, and check it with a thermometer. If it arrives lukewarm, either the water heater is set low or the run from it is long — running the hot tap immediately before starting the machine pulls hot water to the appliance and fixes the first fill for free. Some machines heat their own water and take longer to compensate.
Fill the salt reservoir if your machine has one
Some dishwashers, particularly European brands, include a built-in water softener with a separate salt reservoir — a screw cap in the floor of the tub, distinct from the detergent and rinse aid dispensers. If your machine has one and it has never been filled, hardness is being dealt with by nothing at all. Use only dishwasher salt, not table salt, and check the hardness setting in the machine's menu matches your actual water. Many owners never discover this reservoir exists.
Clean the filter, arms and interior
Scale and film build up inside the machine as well as on the dishes, and a coated heating element and clogged spray jets make everything worse. Pull the filter and wash it, clear each spray arm jet with a toothpick, and run an empty hot cycle with a descaler or citric acid product to strip the accumulated scale off the tub and the element. If you are in a hard water area, this becomes routine maintenance rather than a one-off repair.
Change what you load and how
Aluminium items — some pans, moka pots, cheap trays — react in a dishwasher and can leave a grey-white deposit on nearby glassware that is not scale at all. Overcrowding stops water reaching surfaces and leaves residue where the spray never landed. And thin, decorative or old glassware is far more vulnerable to etching than modern tempered glass, so if the vinegar test told you the damage is permanent, keeping those pieces out of the machine is the fix that actually works.

There is very little here for an appliance technician, and that is worth saying plainly — the test in the first step tells you whether this is a water chemistry and dosing problem rather than a mechanical fault, and it usually is.
