There are only two ways a dryer gets too hot, and they need separating before anything else. Either the heat is correct and the air is not moving, so the heat has nowhere to go and the drum climbs, or the heat control itself has failed and the element is running when it should be cycling off. Restricted airflow costs nothing to fix and has to be eliminated first regardless, because while it is present the heat-control parts cannot be tested meaningfully. The heat control faults are cheap parts but need proper testing, and one of them — an element shorted to the chassis — is genuinely dangerous.
Read this first
- A dryer running too hot is a fire risk and a fabric damage risk at the same time. Take it out of service until you have found the cause.
- Unplug an electric dryer, or unplug and close the gas shutoff on a gas dryer, before opening the cabinet.
- A dryer that heats when it should not — with the timer off, or on an air-fluff setting — has an electrical fault. Unplug it and do not run it again until that is resolved.
- Never remove a thermal fuse from the circuit or bypass a thermostat to keep a dryer running. Those parts exist because the alternative is a fire.
- The element housing and exhaust duct stay hot long after a cycle. Let them cool.
Step by step
Check first whether it heats when it should not
This is the one answer that changes everything. Set the machine to an air-fluff or no-heat cycle and run it for a few minutes, then feel the exhaust. Also note whether the drum gets warm when the machine is switched off entirely. Heat where there should be none means an electric element has shorted to its housing and is being energised through the chassis. Unplug the machine and stop running it — that fault also trips breakers and needs a resistance-to-ground test before the dryer is used again.
Measure what you actually have
Do not judge heat by hand on hot laundry. Put a probe thermometer in the drum with a small damp load, or hold it in the exhaust airstream at the back of the machine, and note the reading through a cycle on a normal heat setting. Compare that against the specification in your model documentation rather than against a number from the internet, because designed exhaust temperatures differ between machines and fuel types. What you are looking for is whether the temperature climbs and keeps climbing rather than cycling up and down.
Clean the entire vent run
Restricted exhaust is the first cause to eliminate because it produces exactly this symptom with every component working perfectly. Disconnect the transition duct, brush and vacuum the full run to the exterior hood, and check the hood flap opens freely. Replace any foil or vinyl flexible duct with rigid or semi-rigid metal, and take out unnecessary bends. A dryer that cannot exhaust recirculates its own heat, and the thermostats end up holding the element on because the air reaching them never reads hot.
Water-test the lint screen
Take the screen out and run water onto it. If the water pools or beads rather than running straight through, a film of fabric softener and dryer sheet residue has closed the mesh, and airflow has been restricted for a long time without anything looking wrong. Wash it with hot water, a little detergent and a soft brush, dry it, and refit it. Then vacuum the housing the screen sits in as far down as you can reach.
Check the blower wheel and the drum seals
With the power off, find the blower wheel and check it is clean, undamaged and tight on the motor shaft. A wheel with a cracked hub slips, so the motor spins at full speed while the wheel does not, and airflow collapses without any obvious noise. At the same time, check the felt drum seals front and rear: a worn seal lets air bypass the drum entirely, so the machine pulls air around the load rather than through it, which raises drum temperature and drops drying performance together.
Test the cycling thermostat
The cycling thermostat is what switches the element off when the air reaches temperature and back on as it falls. If its contacts have welded closed, the element never switches off and the drum simply keeps climbing until the high-limit or the thermal fuse intervenes. With the machine unplugged, find it on the blower housing or the exhaust duct, disconnect it, and test for continuity — it should be closed at room temperature and should open when heated. Thermostats are usually sold as a kit with the thermal fuse, which is worth taking.
Test the high-limit thermostat and the thermal fuse
The high-limit sits on the element housing and is the backstop that cuts heat if the cycling thermostat fails. The thermal fuse is a one-shot device that kills the machine entirely. Test both for continuity. Here is the important part: if either has operated, do not simply replace it and carry on. Something made the machine hot enough to trip a safety device, and that something is almost always the vent. Replacing the fuse without clearing the restriction gets you a second blown fuse and no progress.
Look at the load and the settings
Some of this is operational rather than mechanical. Overloading stops air moving through the clothes so the drum runs hotter for longer, and a machine set to a high-heat cycle for delicates or synthetics will damage them at a temperature that is entirely correct for towels. Check which cycle is actually being selected, and check that an auto-dry cycle is not ending late because the moisture sensor bars are coated — wipe them with rubbing alcohol, since residue there makes the machine run past dry.

When to call a pro
Take this to a technician if the vent is clear, the thermostats test correctly, and the machine still overheats — at that point you are into the timer or control board deciding to hold heat, and that needs measurement rather than substitution. On a gas dryer, anything involving the burner, the gas valve coils or the flame sensor is licensed work and should not be attempted at home. And if you found the machine heating with the controls off, treat that as urgent: it is an electrical fault, not a temperature calibration issue, and the dryer should stay unplugged until it is resolved.
