A breaker trips because current went somewhere it should not — usually a component that has shorted to the metal chassis. The diagnosis is unusually clean on a dryer because the timing of the trip tells you which circuit is at fault. A machine that trips the instant you press start is a different problem from one that trips the moment heat comes on, which is different again from one that runs for twenty minutes and then trips. Establish the timing first; it eliminates most of the list before you pick up a meter.
Read this first
- Never fit a larger breaker to stop a dryer tripping. The breaker is sized to protect the wiring in your walls, and replacing it with a bigger one removes that protection while leaving the fault in place.
- Unplug an electric dryer at the outlet before any testing. A 240-volt circuit is not something to work live.
- A breaker that trips repeatedly is doing its job. Each trip is evidence, not a nuisance.
- If you find scorching at the outlet, the cord, the plug or the terminal block, stop and call an electrician — that is a house wiring assessment before it is an appliance repair.
- On a gas dryer, the motor and controls still run on 120 volts and can still trip a breaker. Close the gas shutoff before opening the cabinet.
Step by step
Establish exactly when it trips
Run the machine and watch the clock. Trips immediately on power or on pressing start, before anything gets warm, points at the motor, the wiring, or a hard short in the cabinet. Trips within a minute or two, at the moment the heat kicks in, points at the heating element shorted to its housing, since the element is the only thing that circuit energises at that moment. Trips after fifteen or twenty minutes of normal running points at something that fails as it heats up, which brings the thermostats, the motor and a loose connection into play.
Rule out the circuit itself first
Before opening the dryer, check that the breaker is not simply failing. Push it fully off and firmly back on. Check whether anything else shares the circuit, which it should not — a dryer needs a dedicated circuit. Check whether the trips started after other electrical work in the house. And confirm the machine is on the outlet it was designed for; a dryer plugged into an extension lead or an adapter will trip for reasons that have nothing to do with the appliance.
Inspect the cord, plug and outlet
Unplug the machine and look at the plug pins and the face of the outlet. Blackening, pitting, melted plastic or a pin that has become loose in its slot means heat has been building at that connection for some time, and a loose high-current connection is a genuine fire risk in its own right. Do not sand a pitted pin and carry on. A damaged outlet is an electrician's job; a damaged cord is a straightforward part but only once you know why it cooked.
Check the terminal block behind the access cover
At the lower rear of the dryer there is a small cover over the terminal block where the cord lands. Take it off and look. You are looking for a loose screw, a green or white ground strap that has been fitted wrongly after a cord change, a wire strand escaped from under a screw and touching the chassis, and browned or crumbling insulation. Cord swaps between three-prong and four-prong configurations are worth suspecting specifically where the dryer has tripped since the day it was moved or reinstalled.
Test the heating element to ground
This is the definitive test for the fault that a heat-timed trip points at. With the machine unplugged, get access to the element and disconnect both of its leads. Measure resistance between each element terminal and the bare metal of the element housing or the cabinet. A healthy element reads open to ground — effectively infinite. Any measurable reading means the coil has sagged and is touching its housing, which puts a direct path to earth across a 240-volt supply. A grounded element also produces a second telltale: the dryer heats even when it should not.
Check the motor windings to ground
If the machine trips on start rather than on heat, disconnect the motor and measure from each of its terminals to the motor frame. As with the element, you want an open reading. A motor whose windings have broken down to the frame trips instantly and usually smells electrical. Also spin the motor and blower by hand — a seized motor drawing locked-rotor current can trip a breaker without any insulation fault at all, and that is a different, cheaper conversation than a burnt winding.
Look for a pinched or chafed harness
Trace the wiring loom through the cabinet with a flashlight, particularly anywhere it passes a sheet-metal edge, runs near the drum, or sits close to the element housing. Look for insulation worn through to copper, a wire that has been trapped when a panel was refitted after a previous repair, and connectors that have melted. Machines that have been serviced before are the usual candidates. A wire touching the chassis intermittently is exactly the fault that produces trips people describe as random.
Consider moisture and where the dryer lives
A dryer in a damp basement, a garage, or an unheated outbuilding can trip on a wet day and behave perfectly on a dry one, because moisture across a dusty terminal or a lint-coated element housing provides the leakage path. Vacuum the interior thoroughly, dry it out, and see whether the pattern follows the weather. This is also why a machine that has been in storage or recently moved through rain should be given time to dry before being run.

Call an electrician, not an appliance technician, if you find damage at the outlet, the plug or the house wiring, if other circuits in the property are also tripping, or if you are not equipped to work safely around a 240-volt supply. Call an appliance technician when the element and motor both test clear to ground and the machine still trips, since that points at the timer, the control board or a harness fault that needs tracing. Whatever you do, do not fit a larger breaker to make the symptom go away — that removes the protection on the wiring in your walls and leaves the fault exactly where it was.
