A dryer that damages laundry is not doing anything mysterious. Somewhere in the path a garment takes there is a hard edge, a gap, or a rough patch, and the drum presents every item to it several times a minute. The damage pattern tells you where to look: small snags and pulls point at a burr in the drum, torn and stretched items point at a gap the fabric is being dragged through, and items that come out with a grey or rusty mark point at a coating that has failed. There is also a simple trick for finding a burr you cannot see.
Read this first
- Unplug the machine before reaching into the drum to feel for burrs, and before opening the cabinet.
- Items that work past the drum seal end up in the blower housing or against the heating element. That is a fire path, so treat this as a repair rather than an inconvenience.
- Sheet-metal edges inside a dryer cabinet are sharp. Wear gloves.
- Do not sand or abrade a chipped drum coating and keep using it — bare or rusted metal snags worse than the chip did, and the repair is a drum replacement.
Step by step
Read the damage before you open anything
Lay the damaged items out. Small pulls and pinholes scattered across a garment point at a rough spot on the drum surface. A long tear, a stretched neckline, or an item that comes out twisted and damaged at one point suggests it was caught and dragged. Grease or rust marks point at a bearing or a corroded drum. And a single item damaged while everything else is fine often means something was in the load — a zipper, a hook, an underwire, a bra clasp — rather than the machine being at fault.
Do the stocking test
This is the technique that finds what your eye cannot. Unplug the machine, pull a nylon stocking over your hand, and run your hand slowly over every part of the drum interior — the wall, the baffles and their fixing points, the front and rear faces, and the seam where the drum meets the front bulkhead. The nylon catches on any burr, chip or raised edge instantly. Work methodically and rotate the drum as you go so you cover the whole surface.
Inspect the drum surface and finish
Look closely at what the stocking found. On a painted or enamelled drum, chips expose bare steel that then rusts and roughens, and both the chip edge and the rust snag fabric. A stainless drum can develop a burr at a seam or where a baffle screw has backed out. Be realistic about the fix: tightening a loose baffle or dressing a small raised burr is straightforward, but a drum with widespread chipping and rust is a drum replacement, and on many machines that is close to the cost of a new dryer.
Check the gap at the front of the drum
Open the door and look at the seam where the rotating drum meets the fixed front panel. There should be a felt seal filling that gap all the way round. If the felt is compressed flat, torn, or missing in sections, there is now a slot that a corner of a sheet or a sleeve can be dragged into, which is what produces torn and stretched items. Confirm it by checking whether you have been finding small items — socks, handkerchiefs — behind or under the drum, which is proof things are getting through.
Check the rear seal and the drum glides
Do the same inspection at the rear of the drum, and check the glides or slides the drum front rides on. When those wear through, the drum drops slightly, which opens the gap at the top or the bottom and lets the drum rub metal on metal. Worn glides usually announce themselves with a scraping noise as well as fabric damage. Replace seals and glides as complete sets rather than patching one section, because a new section against three worn ones just moves the gap.
Inspect the lint screen and its slot
Pull the lint screen and check its frame for a crack, a rough moulding seam, or a mesh that has come away from the frame at a corner. Then look into the slot the screen sits in for a sharp edge or a piece of the screen frame left behind from an earlier breakage. A drawstring, a bra strap or a long sleeve finding a crack in that housing will be pulled and torn every rotation. On machines where the screen sits in the door, check the door seal and hinge area as well.
Check the door, the seal and the strike
Run the stocking around the inside of the door, the door seal, and the strike area where the door latches. A cracked door liner, a hardened seal that has split, or a proud screw here catches fabric on every tumble. Check the door closes squarely and does not sit proud of the drum opening at any point, since a misaligned door leaves an edge exposed to the load.
Change what and how you load
Some of this is avoidable regardless of the machine. Zip zips, fasten hooks and clasps, turn embellished items inside out, and put delicates and anything with straps into a mesh laundry bag. Do not overload, because a packed drum forces items into the edges and gaps rather than tumbling them clear of the walls. And check pockets — a screw, a key or a pen loose in a drum will mark and cut a whole load before you notice.

When to call a pro
Hand this over when the damage traces to the drum itself, since drum replacement means substantially dismantling the machine and the part is one of the more expensive on a dryer — get the quote alongside the price of a replacement dryer before deciding, particularly on an older machine. It is also worth a technician's time if you have been finding garments behind the drum, because anything that has reached the blower housing or the element area needs removing properly rather than being left there. If a seal has worn because a bearing or roller has let the drum drop, fix the cause, not just the felt.
