Dryer Smells Like Burning — Stop and Find It Before the Next Load

A burning smell from a dryer deserves to be treated as urgent, because the machine is full of the one thing that turns a hot component into a fire. It is also usually diagnosable, and the smell itself is the biggest clue: scorched lint smells like burnt dust and paper, a slipping belt smells like hot rubber, a failing motor smells sharp and electrical, and a brand new dryer or a newly fitted element smells faintly of hot oil for the first few loads and is fine. Work out which smell you have before you touch anything.

  • Stop using the dryer now. A burning smell in a machine full of lint is the early stage of the most common appliance fire in a house, and it is not something to run one more load past.
  • Unplug an electric dryer, or unplug and close the gas shutoff on a gas dryer, before opening the cabinet.
  • If you smell gas rather than burning, leave the building, do not operate any switch, and call your gas utility from outside.
  • Never run a dryer with the lint screen out or the vent disconnected while you investigate.
  • If you find scorch marks, melted insulation, or a browned terminal block, the machine goes out of service until an electrician or technician has seen it.

Step by step

  1. Take it out of service and characterise the smell

    Unplug the machine — and close the gas shutoff if it is a gas dryer — and let it cool. Then think about what the smell was actually like. Burnt dust and paper points at lint on a hot surface. Hot rubber points at the belt or a drum seal dragging. Sharp, acrid, electrical, sometimes with a hint of ozone, points at the motor or the wiring. Sweet or plasticky points at something in the load. And a hot-metal smell on a brand new machine, fading over the first several loads, is manufacturing residue burning off.

  2. Empty the drum and check what was in the load

    Before opening the cabinet, look at what you were drying. A crayon, a lip balm, a pen, a lighter or a piece of chewing gum in a pocket produces a smell that has nothing to do with a fault, and leaves a mess in the drum that keeps smelling until it is cleaned off. Rubber-backed bath mats and anything with foam degrade at drying temperatures and smell strongly of hot rubber. Wipe the drum out with a damp cloth and look carefully at the drum wall for a smear or a melted deposit.

  3. Pull the lint screen and clean its housing

    Take the screen out and hold it up to the light — if a film of fabric softener residue has closed the mesh, water poured on it will pool rather than run through, and airflow has been strangled for a while. Then vacuum the housing the screen sits in, using a crevice tool and a flexible brush to reach as far down the slot as you can. Lint packed in that housing sits directly in the hot airstream, and it is one of the two places where scorched lint actually happens.

  4. Clean the entire vent run, machine to hood

    Disconnect the transition duct at the back of the dryer and look inside it and into the outlet on the machine. Then brush and vacuum the full run out to the exterior hood, and go outside and check the flap opens freely and is not blocked by lint, a nest, or paint. Restricted exhaust makes everything inside the cabinet run hotter than it was designed to, which is how a smell starts in the first place. This is the highest-value thing you will do in this guide even if it turns out not to be the source.

  5. Open the cabinet and look for lint inside it

    This is the part most people never see. Lint escapes past a worn drum seal into the cabinet, where it collects on the base, around the motor, and on or near the heating element or gas burner. That is scorched lint waiting to happen, and it is the classic cause of a burning smell with a clean lint screen. Take the front or rear panel off according to your model's design, and vacuum the interior thoroughly — the base, the blower housing, the element housing, and around the motor.

  6. Check the belt and turn the drum by hand

    With the power off, reach in and rotate the drum. It should turn smoothly with light, even resistance. If it is stiff, notchy, or drags at one point, the drum is fighting something and the belt is slipping against it — which produces heat, rubber smell, and eventually a snapped belt. Look at the belt for glazing, fraying or a shiny worn strip. Then check the drum support rollers and the idler pulley: a seized roller is the usual reason a drum becomes hard to turn.

  7. Assess the motor

    Spin the blower wheel and the motor shaft by hand. Grinding, stiffness or side-to-side play means worn bearings, and a motor working against its own bearings gets hot and smells electrical. Look for discoloured windings or a scorched smell coming specifically from the motor housing. Also check the blower wheel is tight on its shaft and has not filled with lint — a wheel packed with lint unbalances the motor and loads it. A motor that runs hot enough to smell should not be run again until it is replaced.

  8. Inspect the terminal block, cord and connections

    With the machine unplugged, look at the terminal block at the back where the power cord lands, and at the connectors on the element or the gas valve. You are looking for browned or blackened terminals, hardened or cracked insulation, and a screw that has worked loose. This is a common and genuinely dangerous find on older machines, and it produces a hot electrical smell with no other symptom. Anything scorched here means the machine stays off until an electrician or technician has assessed it.

When to call a pro

Call for help rather than continuing if you find scorching, melted insulation, or a browned terminal block anywhere in the machine — that is an electrical assessment, not a parts swap. On a gas dryer, anything involving the burner assembly, the gas valve or its connections is licensed work; if you smell gas at any point, leave and call the utility from outside. It is also worth paying for a full professional vent cleaning where the run is long, goes through a wall or roof cavity, or you cannot get a brush through it — that duct is where the fire risk actually lives, and it is the one part of the system you cannot inspect from the laundry room.
