A ram stuck partway down its stroke is the one fault on a trash compactor that deserves genuine caution. The mechanism is a motor driving two vertical power screws through a belt, and it is capable of enormous force with no sense of what is in the way. Everything below assumes the machine is unplugged and stays unplugged, and that anything raised is blocked mechanically before you reach past it. Work that way and this is a tractable repair.

Step by step
Unplug it and leave it unplugged
Pull the plug or switch off the breaker, then press the start control to confirm nothing responds. Do not plug it back in to 'just try one more cycle' partway through the job — that is how people get hurt on these. If the unit is hardwired, switch off and lock out the breaker, and verify the circuit is dead at the junction box if you are equipped to do so safely.
Empty what you can reach
Open the drawer as far as it will go and, with heavy gloves on, take out everything you can reach from the front. Removing the load takes the pressure off the ram and very often lets it return the moment power is restored. Be systematic and use a flashlight; a can lid or a piece of broken glass wedged at the drawer rim is both the likely jam and the likely injury.
Find the jam
With the drawer out and the unit still unplugged, look up alongside the ram with a flashlight. What stalls a ram is nearly always something rigid and vertical — a length of timber, a metal curtain rail, an aerosol can, a bottle standing upright against the drawer wall. Note it before you try to free it. Something that has wedged between the ram plate and the cabinet side needs the ram raised before it will come out, not more force.
Block the ram before reaching under it
If you need to work beneath the ram plate for any reason, cut two solid timber blocks and stand them under the plate on the drawer floor so the ram physically cannot descend. Do not use a jack, a bottle, or anything that can slip. This is the single most important step in the whole guide, and it takes five minutes.
Check the top limit switch
The ram is stopped at its park position by a limit switch, and stopped at the bottom of its stroke by a directional switch that reverses the motor. A ram parked partway down often means the top limit switch has failed, so the control never learned the ram had reached home. Find the switches along the ram's travel path, actuate each by hand with the unit unplugged, and test for continuity. They are inexpensive standard microswitches and they are the most common electrical cause of this.
Check the drive belt and the power screws
Remove the top or rear access panel and look at the belt running from the motor to the drive assembly. A snapped or badly slipping belt gives you a motor that clearly runs while the ram stays where it is. Then inspect the two vertical power screws for damaged threads, and look in the base of the cabinet for metal shavings — shavings mean the drive nuts are stripping, which is what produces a ram that stalls partway down under load.
Hand-crank the drive if your model allows it
Some compactors let you turn the drive manually, either at the motor shaft or through the gearbox, to walk the ram back up. Consult the service documentation for your model rather than guessing, because forcing the wrong shaft can shear a key or damage the gearbox. Where this is supported, it is the clean way to recover a ram without dismantling anything.
Assess the drive nuts honestly
If the ram descends smoothly under its own weight when the belt is off, or if the screws turn without the ram moving, the drive nuts have stripped. That is a heavy strip-down, the parts run $60 to $220, and on an older machine it is often where the repair stops making financial sense. Weigh the parts and labour against what a working compactor is worth to you before you order anything.
