Noise from a wine cooler matters more than noise from a fridge, because sustained vibration is genuinely bad for wine — it agitates sediment and is widely believed to accelerate ageing. The good news is that most wine cooler noise is not the cooling system at all. It is a rack that has worked loose, a cabinet standing on three of its four feet, or a fan blade that has picked up dust. All three are free to fix.

Step by step
Establish which type of cooler you own
Thermoelectric coolers use solid-state modules and fans, run continuously, and should produce only a steady low fan hum with no starting and stopping. Compressor coolers cycle audibly, with a distinct start and shutdown every so often, and a low hum in between. Knowing which you have tells you immediately whether a repeated clicking or a periodic start-up is normal behaviour or a fault. The specification plate on the back will confirm it.
Locate the noise before you touch anything
Open the door with the unit running and listen. If the noise gets louder, it is the interior fan. If it goes quiet, either that fan cuts on the door switch or the sound was coming from inside the cabinet. If the door makes no difference and the sound is from low at the back, you are into the compressor, the condenser fan, or the drain pan. A cardboard tube held to your ear works well as a stethoscope on a quiet appliance.
Level the cabinet and lock the feet
Put a bubble level on top and check side to side and front to back. Adjust the threaded feet until the cabinet is level and all four are genuinely carrying weight — push each corner in turn and confirm none rocks. Then tighten any lock nuts. A cooler standing on three feet transmits every vibration into the floor and the cabinetry, and this single step resolves a large share of noise complaints.
Check the shelves, racks and bottles
Pull each rack out and refit it, checking it sits properly in its runners and does not rattle when tapped. Wooden racks warp and loosen; wire racks lose their retaining clips. Then look at how the bottles sit — a bottle resting against the back wall or against the glass will buzz with every compressor start. Leave a little clearance and make sure nothing touches the cabinet liner.
Check and clean the fans
Unplug the cooler and look at the interior fan and, at the rear, the condenser or heat sink fan. Dust on the blades unbalances them into a persistent buzz, and a blade that has been knocked out of true or a bearing that has dried out will whine. Spin each by hand: it should coast freely and silently. Fans are the most commonly failed part in a thermoelectric cooler and they are $20 to $70.
Clicking every few minutes — check the start relay
On a compressor cooler, a click every three to five minutes with no sustained cooling is the start relay failing to get the compressor going. Unplug the unit, pull the relay from the side of the compressor, and shake it — a rattle condemns it. It is a $15 to $55 part and replacing it promptly matters, because a relay repeatedly stalling a compressor eventually kills the compressor.
Check what the cabinet is touching
Run your hand around the cooler with it running. A cabinet whose side is pressed against a wall, an adjoining unit, or a countertop overhang turns a small vibration into a loud one by using the structure as a soundboard. Pull it out an inch or two if it is freestanding, and fit anti-vibration pads under the feet — those cost a few dollars and are the cheapest meaningful improvement you can make.
Decide whether the remaining noise actually matters
Once it is level, clean, clear of contact and the fans are good, a compressor cooler will still hum and start audibly, and a thermoelectric one will still run a constant fan. That is what these appliances do. If you want genuine silence beside a living space, a thermoelectric model is inherently quieter but limited on ambient range, and that is a purchasing decision rather than a repair.

When to call a pro
Call a technician if the noise is a loud growl or a metallic scrape from inside the compressor housing itself, since that means internal wear and the compressor is part of the sealed system — EPA Section 608 certified work, typically $300 to $600, against a replacement cooler at $200 to $800 for common undercounter sizes. Bring one in too if a fan is not accessible without dismantling the cooling assembly on a built-in unit. Persistent vibration you cannot trace is worth having looked at before it affects the collection.
