Appliance repair shops get busy in the first sustained hot spell of the year, and it is not a coincidence. Very little actually breaks because of heat. What happens instead is that a marginal condition — a dusty condenser coil, a door gasket that stopped sealing last winter, a freezer that was already running two degrees warm — stops being survivable once the room hits 90°F. The appliance was coping. The heat took away its margin.
That distinction matters because it changes what you do about it. A machine that is genuinely failing needs a technician. A machine that is merely out of margin usually needs an hour of your time and a vacuum cleaner.
Why heat changes everything
Every cooling appliance in your house — refrigerator, freezer, ice maker, wine cooler — works by moving heat from inside the box to the room. It does not create cold. It relocates warmth. The bigger the difference between the inside temperature and the room temperature, the harder that job is, and the longer the compressor has to run to hold the setpoint.
At a comfortable 70°F room, a healthy refrigerator spends a fair part of every hour with the compressor off — call it roughly half, as our own working estimate rather than a measured figure, because it moves with the model, how full the box is and how often the door is opened. Push the room to 95°F and that off-time shrinks fast. At some point the compressor is running essentially continuously and still losing ground. Nothing is broken. The machine has simply hit the edge of what it was designed to do, and any inefficiency you were carrying — blocked airflow, a weak fan, a torn gasket — is now the difference between holding 37°F and drifting to 45°F.
Heat also raises the stakes of a failure. A freezer that quits in January gives you a day of grace in a cool house. The same failure in July gives you a few hours.
The refrigerator problem
The single most common summer complaint is a refrigerator that will not hold temperature, and the single most common cause is a condenser coil packed with dust and pet hair. The coil is the radiator that dumps the heat your food gave up. When it is insulated by a felt of lint, that heat has nowhere to go.
Cleaning it is genuinely free and takes about twenty minutes. Unplug the unit, find the coil — behind the bottom kick plate on most modern units, on the back panel on older ones — and clear it with a coil brush and a vacuum. The second cause is airflow inside the box. Summer is when people over-fill a refrigerator — extra drinks, a watermelon, a party's worth of food — and block the vent that moves cold air from the freezer into the fresh food compartment. Symptoms look alarming and identical to a real fault: warm milk on one shelf, frozen lettuce on another. Pull everything away from the back wall and the rear vents and give it a day.
Third is the door. Gaskets go stiff and take a set over years, and a gasket that seals adequately in a 68°F kitchen can leak badly when the room is 30 degrees warmer and the humidity is high. Close the door on a dollar bill and pull; if it slides out with no drag, that section is not sealing. Work around all four sides. If you find several loose spots, price a gasket before you price a service call.

Garages, basements and porches
The second refrigerator or chest freezer in an uninsulated garage is the appliance most likely to give you trouble in August. Garages in a hot climate routinely run 15 to 25 degrees above the outdoor temperature, which means a 100°F afternoon can produce a 120°F garage. Most standard refrigerators and freezers are rated to operate in ambient temperatures up to roughly 90 to 110°F depending on model; above that, the manufacturer is no longer promising anything.
Things that genuinely help:
- Give it air. Two to three inches of clearance at the back and sides, and nothing stacked on top. A unit shoved into a corner between a wall and a shelving rack is recirculating its own exhaust.
- Get it out of direct sun. A west-facing garage door with afternoon sun on it turns the wall behind into a radiator.
- Keep a chest freezer full. Frozen mass is thermal ballast. A full freezer rides through a compressor cycle — or a power cut — far better than a quarter-full one. Jugs of water fill the gap for free.
- Move a ventilation fan into the space. Even a box fan pushing garage air out through a cracked door drops ambient temperature meaningfully.

Laundry in a hot house
Dryers do not mind heat much, but dryer vents do. A partially blocked duct is tolerable in spring and becomes a real problem in summer, because the machine's high-limit thermostat trips on total temperature, not on how much of it the dryer contributed. Clothes that come out damp after a full cycle, a laundry room that feels like a sauna, or a dryer that shuts down mid-cycle and restarts later all point the same direction.
Pull the duct off the back and check it, then check the exterior hood — the flap should open freely and there should be strong airflow. Washers are largely indifferent to heat, with one exception: a machine that sits unused in a hot, humid laundry room grows biofilm faster than one in a cool basement. If you go away for two weeks in July and come home to a smell, that is what happened. Cleaning it out properly is a $10 to $25 job.
The week before a heat wave
None of this is complicated. It is a short list, and doing it before the forecast turns is much easier than doing it during.
- Vacuum the condenser coils on every refrigerator and freezer in the house, including the garage unit.
- Check door seals with the dollar-bill test on all four sides of each door.
- Put a cheap appliance thermometer in the fridge and the freezer and read it after 24 hours. You want roughly 37°F and 0°F. If you are drifting warm now, you will be in trouble later.
- Clear the space around and above any unit in a garage or utility room.
- Clean the dryer vent from the machine to the exterior hood.
- Top up a partly empty chest freezer with sealed jugs of water.
Total cost: an appliance thermometer, maybe a coil brush. Total time: an afternoon.
When it is a real fault
Stop doing homeowner maintenance and call someone when you see any of these:
- The compressor is running continuously and the box is still climbing after you have cleaned the coils and confirmed airflow.
- The unit is warm at the back but the compressor is silent, or it clicks every few minutes and does not start — that pattern points at the start relay or the compressor itself.
- You hear the compressor but the condenser fan never spins.
- There is frost on some of the evaporator coil and not the rest, which usually means a refrigerant or sealed-system problem rather than anything you can clean.
- A freezer full of food is climbing and you need a decision today rather than a diagnosis next week.
Sealed-system work is licensed work, and it is the one area of appliance repair where the price genuinely can run to $900 for a job on a unit that owes you nothing.
