Every storm season produces the same pattern of calls: not during the outage, but in the week after it. A refrigerator that hums and clicks and will not start. A dryer that turns but never heats. A dishwasher whose control panel has forgotten what it is. Nobody connects them to the power cut because the appliance worked fine when the lights came back.
What follows is what actually happens electrically, what to do in the hours around an outage, and which of the popular precautions are worth the money.
Three different events, three different kinds of damage
“The power went out” covers three things that are not the same.
An outage is simply the absence of power, and on its own it is the least harmful of the three. Nothing is being driven, nothing is overheating; you have a food problem, not usually an appliance problem.
A brownout or sag is reduced voltage — the lights dim and stay dim, or dip repeatedly. This is the one that quietly kills motors. A compressor asked to produce normal torque at reduced voltage draws more current, gets hotter, and may stall outright, which is exactly the condition its overload protector exists for. If your lights browned out before the outage, that is the part of the event to worry about.
A surge or spike is a brief overvoltage — a switching event on the utility side, a nearby lightning strike, or a large motor in your own house shutting down. Electronics are what suffer: control boards, displays, and the low-voltage side of anything with a circuit board in it. A mechanical timer does not care. A modern washer with two control boards very much does.
Why the restore is the dangerous moment
When power comes back to a neighbourhood, every refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner and heat pump on the circuit tries to start within the same second, and every one of them draws several times its running current while doing so. That collective inrush is why a restore is frequently followed by a second brief outage or a sag.
The specific risk to a refrigerator is worth understanding. When a compressor shuts down, the pressure in the sealed system stays unequalised for a few minutes. Try to restart it against that pressure and it may not be able to turn — you get the characteristic pattern of a click, a hum for a second or two, then silence, repeating every few minutes as the overload protector cycles. Given a few minutes of rest the pressures equalise and it starts normally. Given a restore that flickers on, off and on again, it may try repeatedly against a locked rotor, which is genuinely hard on the start relay and the compressor windings.
This is why the single most useful thing you can do in an outage costs nothing: unplug or switch off the large motor loads, wait for the power to come back and settle, then bring them back one at a time over several minutes. A refrigerator that comes back last, on a stable supply, has an easy time of it.
During the outage
The food question dominates, and there is published guidance rather than folklore for it. USDA food safety guidance is that an unopened refrigerator holds food safe for about four hours, a full freezer for about 48 hours, and a half-full freezer for about 24. Perishable food held above 40°F for more than two hours should be discarded, and thawed food may be safely refrozen if it still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below.
Everything practical follows from that:
- Keep the doors shut. Every opening spends part of your four hours. Decide what you need before you open it.
- A full freezer buys time. Frozen mass is thermal ballast. If outages are routine where you live, keeping the freezer topped up with sealed jugs of water is free insurance.
- Move refrigerator items to the freezer if the outage looks long, or into a cooler with ice.
- Do not judge by taste or smell. Use a thermometer. This is the reason to keep a cheap appliance thermometer in both compartments year-round.
- Unplug the sensitive things — anything with a control board that is not doing useful work. That includes the microwave, the range if it is electronic, the dishwasher and the washer.
The trick for an outage you were not home for: freeze a cup of water solid, put a coin on top of the ice, and leave it in the freezer. If you come home and the coin is at the bottom of the cup, the contents thawed and refroze while you were away, whatever the display currently says.
When the power comes back
Work through this in order rather than switching everything on at once.
- Wait a few minutes before restoring anything large. Restores are often unstable for the first minute or two.
- Refrigerator and freezer first, alone. Plug in, then stand there and listen. You want the compressor to start and stay running. Clicking and humming in a repeating cycle means it is failing to start — unplug it, give it half an hour, and try again. If it does the same thing after that, it is a start relay or compressor problem and it needs real diagnosis rather than repeated attempts.
- Then everything else, one at a time, a minute or so apart.
- Check the breakers and any GFCI outlets. A surge can trip either. A dead disposal or a dead outlet behind the refrigerator is frequently just a tripped GFCI on a kitchen circuit.
- Check clocks and settings. Ovens, dishwashers and washers often need the time reset before they will run a cycle at all. A machine that seems dead may just be waiting for you to set the clock.
- Verify the temperature after 24 hours with a thermometer rather than trusting the display. 37°F and 0°F.
What shows up days later
These are the calls that come in the following week, and knowing the connection saves a lot of confusion:
- A refrigerator that runs constantly but does not get cold enough. Sometimes a struggling compressor; often, after a long outage, simply the recovery load of a warm box full of warm food. Give it 24 hours before assuming the worst, then read the running-constantly guide.
- A dryer that tumbles but does not heat. On many machines a thermal fuse or thermal cutoff is the sacrificial component, and it does not reset — see no heat.
- A control panel that is dead, partially dead, or displaying nonsense. That is the classic surge signature. Before assuming the worst, try a hard reset: kill power at the breaker for five minutes and restore it. It works more often than people expect, and it is free. If it does not, read what a control board quote really means before authorising the repair, because a board is often the point at which the machine stops being worth fixing.
- An ice maker that never restarted. Many resume on their own after several hours; some need the arm cycled. Give it a day before calling it a fault.
Protection worth paying for
Being honest about which precautions actually do something.
Whole-house surge protection at the service panel is the one with real value for large appliances. An electrician installs it, and it protects everything downstream including the 240V circuits a plug-in strip cannot touch. Expect an installed cost in the low hundreds as an editorial estimate, and get a quote locally. It is not a guarantee — nothing survives a direct strike — and units have a finite absorption capacity, so the indicator light matters.
Point-of-use protectors are worth it for electronics and fine for a plug-in microwave. They do nothing for a hardwired range, a 240V dryer, or anything on a circuit they are not on.
Refrigerator voltage protectors are a reasonable buy if your supply genuinely browns out regularly. They disconnect on out-of-range voltage and reconnect after a delay, which addresses the short-cycling problem directly.
Generators need two cautions. Connect through a transfer switch installed by an electrician — backfeeding a house through an outlet endangers utility crews. And size it for starting current, not running watts: a generator that sags every time a compressor kicks in is subjecting that motor to the brownout condition above, repeatedly, for as long as the outage lasts.
The honest summary
Most appliances come through most outages perfectly well. The ones that do not were usually already marginal, and the restore was simply the moment that got found out — the same pattern as a heat wave or a holiday cooking day. If a machine dies in a storm and it was fifteen years old, the storm is not really why.
Do the free things: stagger the restore, keep the doors shut, keep a thermometer in the box, and reset a confused board at the breaker before you call anyone. If something genuinely failed, the directory lists repair businesses by state and city, and if the quote is significant on an older machine, the Appliance Blue Book will tell you whether it is worth spending on.
