There is a moment in a lot of appliance repairs where the diagnosis shifts from a specific mechanical part to “the board.” The price roughly doubles, the confidence in the room usually drops, and you are asked to authorise several hundred dollars on the strength of a component nobody can point at and say “look, it is burnt.”
Sometimes that is exactly right and the board has failed. Often enough that it is worth knowing about, it is a diagnosis of exclusion — the technician has ruled out what they can test and the board is what is left. Those are not the same thing, and the difference is worth a few hundred dollars.
What a control board actually does
Modern appliances have between one and four boards. The names vary by manufacturer but the roles are consistent:
- The main or power control board switches the loads — motors, valves, heaters, compressors — and holds the cycle logic.
- The user interface or touchpad board reads your presses and drives the display. On many machines this is a separate board that fails separately, and it is often much cheaper.
- Inverter or motor control boards drive variable-speed motors and compressors on machines that have them.
- Sensor or auxiliary boards handle dispensers, ice makers, or temperature management in a specific compartment.
That distinction matters immediately: “the board” is ambiguous, and the difference between a user interface board and a main control board can be a factor of three in price. Ask which one, by name and part number.
Why the quote jumps
Boards are expensive for three reasons that have nothing to do with what is on them.
They are model-specific. A drive belt fits dozens of machines. A control board fits one model family and sometimes one revision within it. Low volume, no substitutes, and pricing set by the only supplier.
They are non-returnable. Electronic parts are almost universally sold as final sale, precisely because they cannot be tested after installation without risk. This means a wrong diagnosis is not recoverable: you own the board. It also means shops are cautious about board diagnoses, or should be.
They may need programming or pairing. On some appliances a replacement board must be configured to the model, or paired with another board. That is labor, and on some brands it requires tools only the authorized network has — which can force you to factory service whether you wanted to or not.
Boards get blamed for other things
Before authorising a board, it is fair to ask what was ruled out. These are the things that commonly present as board failures and are not:
- Power supply problems. A miswired outlet, a shared neutral, a failing breaker, or on a dryer or range a single blown leg of a 240V supply. A dryer that tumbles but will not heat is the classic case — it can be a supply issue, and the diagnostic sequence covers checking it.
- A failed sensor sending an impossible reading. The board is doing exactly what it should with bad information. An oven temperature sensor is $15 to $30; the board it gets blamed for is $90 to $380.
- A stuck or failed switch. Door switches, lid switches and interlocks stop machines dead in ways that look like electronic failure. A washer that will not start is more often a lid switch or door lock than a board.
- Moisture and corrosion. Water reaching a board is a real failure — but the source matters, because a new board in the same wet location fails the same way. Ask where the water came from.
- A shorted load that took the board out. If a motor or heater failed short and damaged the board, replacing only the board puts a new board across the same fault. Both need replacing, which changes the economics again.
- Loose or corroded connectors. Boards are eliminated far too often by technicians who have not reseated the harnesses.
None of this means your technician is wrong. It means there is a reasonable question to ask, and the answer tells you a lot: “What did you test that points at the board specifically, rather than pointing away from everything else?” A technician who says “I have line voltage in and no output to the valve, with the valve tested good” has diagnosed a board. A technician who says “it must be the board” has diagnosed nothing.
What boards actually cost

Add labor and any programming, and a board job commonly lands somewhere in the $250 to $600 range installed. Hold that against the appliance's current value, not its purchase price.
The microwave row is the clearest case in the table. A $50 to $220 board plus labor, on an appliance with a nine-year expected life and a $250 replacement cost, is almost never the right call on a countertop unit. It can be right on a built-in or over-the-range model, where replacement means installation work and a much higher appliance price.
The range row is the opposite. A $1,000 appliance with a fourteen-year expected life, where the cabinet, cooktop and oven cavity are all fine, is worth a board at nine or ten years in a way a dishwasher never is.
Rebuilt boards and board repair services
There is a middle option most people do not know exists. Independent electronics shops rebuild appliance control boards — you send yours in, they replace the failed components, and it comes back. There are also remanufactured boards sold at a discount to new.
Where this makes sense:
- The board is discontinued and no new stock exists, which is common on appliances past ten years.
- The new board price is genuinely prohibitive relative to the appliance.
- You are confident in the diagnosis, because sending out a good board wastes the turnaround.
The trade is downtime — typically one to two weeks without the appliance — and a warranty that varies a great deal by vendor. Ask what the warranty is and whether it covers labor to refit. This route suits a range or a wall oven, where you can cook otherwise. It suits a refrigerator very badly.
The other middle option: a used board from a salvaged identical unit. Cheap, no warranty to speak of, and a reasonable gamble on an old machine you are trying to get another year out of.
Making the call
A short sequence that resolves most board decisions:
- Get the specific board named, with a part number. Then look it up yourself through the parts supplier directory and see what a homeowner pays. If the quoted part line is far above that, ask about it.
- Ask what was tested. A board diagnosis should rest on inputs present and outputs absent, with the loads themselves tested good.
- Ask whether a sensor, switch or supply problem was ruled out — specifically the cheap ones.
- Ask whether anything else failed with it. A board taken out by a shorted component means two parts, not one.
- Run the appliance through the Blue Book with the installed board price as the repair cost. If it comes back replace, that is your answer.
- Check the warranty on the repair. A non-returnable part diagnosed by exclusion is exactly the situation where a year of parts-and-labor cover is worth paying for. Read the quote properly before approving.
One last thing worth saying plainly: a control board quote on an appliance in its final third is usually the moment to stop. Not because boards are a scam — they fail, and replacing them works — but because a several-hundred-dollar, non-returnable, model-specific part is the least sensible thing to put into a machine that is going to need something else next year. Where that line falls by appliance type is worth reading before you decide.
