Which Appliances Are Worth Repairing Past Ten Years

“It is over ten years old” is used as though it settles the question. It does not — a ten-year-old range and a ten-year-old dishwasher are in completely different positions.

Ten years has become the folk threshold at which an appliance is written off, and it is a bad rule because it treats every appliance as the same machine. A dishwasher at ten years has spent its whole expected life. A chest freezer at ten years is two-thirds of the way through and quite likely to give you another five good years. Same number, opposite conclusions.

What follows is a more useful frame: what an appliance's expected service life actually is, how the repair cost should be weighed against it, and where the honest lines fall.

Lifespan is not a deadline

The expected service life of an appliance is a working average, not an expiry date. Plenty of appliances outlive theirs by years, particularly ones that were well maintained, lightly used, or mechanically simple. What the number gives you is a position on a curve, and the position is what matters.

These are the figures the Appliance Blue Book uses, and they are what the rest of this article is measured against:

Brand tier shifts the price column substantially — a luxury-tier unit can be roughly twice a mid-tier equivalent, a budget unit meaningfully less — which is why the same repair quote can be sensible on one machine and absurd on another of the same age.

The appliances that age well

Ranges and ovens. The best repair candidates in the house. A range is a box, some elements or burners, a thermostat and a control. The expensive part — the cabinet and cooktop — does not wear out. The parts that fail are cheap: an oven igniter at $25 to $90, a radiant element at $25 to $100, a temperature sensor at $15 to $30. A fourteen-year-old range with a failed element is usually a straightforward yes. Even a control board at $90 to $380 can make sense on a $1,000 appliance that is otherwise sound.

Standalone freezers. Long expected life, simple mechanically, and the fault list is short: a defrost thermostat, a fan motor, a gasket, a lid hinge. All inexpensive. A twelve-year-old chest freezer with a defrost fault is worth fixing. The exception is a sealed-system failure, which changes the answer at any age.

Dryers. Mechanically the simplest major appliance: a drum, a belt, a motor, a heat source, thermostats. Nearly every common failure is a part under $65 and an hour of labor. A twelve-year-old dryer that stopped heating is a repair, not a replacement, unless the drum or bearings have gone.

Range hoods. Long life, cheap parts, and mostly ductwork and a motor. Fix them.

Top-load washers with agitators. Simple, well understood, and cheap to service. Parts are everywhere.

The appliances that do not

Microwaves. The shortest expected life of the group and the lowest replacement cost. Once a countertop microwave needs anything beyond a turntable coupler or a lamp, the repair approaches the price of a new one. A magnetron or high-voltage repair quoted at $150 to $400 against a $250 appliance is not a close call. Over-the-range and built-in microwaves are different — they cost far more to replace and involve installation, so the repair maths is genuinely different there.

Dishwashers. Ten-year life, moderate replacement cost, and the expensive failures are expensive. A circulation pump and motor at $90 to $330 in parts, plus labor, on a nine-year-old $700 machine is usually a no. Cheap failures — a door latch, a float switch, a rack roller kit, a clogged drain — are worth fixing at almost any age because they cost so little. This is the appliance where the specific fault matters most.

Garbage disposals. Almost never worth a repair beyond clearing a jam or resealing a connection. A jam clears for free with the hex wrench; a leak at the flange is a few dollars of plumber's putty. Anything internal — motor, seals, corroded chamber — and you replace the unit, because a new one is $90 to $380 and installation is straightforward.

Ice makers. Shortest life on the list. Standalone units accumulate scale and pump failures, and by year eight a $150 to $400 repair on a $400 appliance rarely pays.

Any appliance with a sealed-system failure. This is the category-independent rule. Compressor, condenser, evaporator or refrigerant leak on a refrigerator, freezer or wine cooler is the most expensive repair in the field — realistically up to $900 — and it is the one where age decides. Under about half of expected life on a good unit, it can be worth it. Past two-thirds, it very rarely is.

The fifty percent rule

The heuristic that survives contact with reality: do not spend more than half of what the appliance is currently worth on a repair. Not half of what you paid — half of what it is worth now, which after eight or ten years is a much smaller number.

That is exactly the calculation the Blue Book performs. It depreciates from the original price using a curve appropriate to the appliance type, adjusts for brand tier and condition, and returns three outcomes:

  • Repair — comfortably inside expected life with real value remaining. Most repairs make sense.
  • Borderline — past roughly two-thirds of expected life, or under 30 percent of value remaining. Small repairs yes, big repairs no. Get the quote before committing.
  • Replace — past roughly 85 percent of expected life, or under 15 percent of value remaining. Repairs above about $150 are unlikely to pay back.

The rule has one important exception in each direction. Upward: a cheap fix is worth doing at almost any age, because a $40 part that buys a year is good value on any machine. Downward: if the appliance has a history of faults, the rule understates the risk.

The second failure problem

Appliances near the end of their life do not fail once. Components that have shared the same duty cycle and the same heat for a decade tend to reach the end at similar times, and a machine that needed a pump last spring and a control board this autumn is telling you something.

A practical version: the second significant repair inside eighteen months on an appliance past two-thirds of its expected life is usually the point to stop. You are no longer buying a fix, you are subsidising a machine that has begun to unwind.

The counter-case is a single, well-understood, cheap failure on a machine that has otherwise been faultless. A twelve-year-old dryer with its first-ever heating element failure is not unwinding; it is a dryer that finally used up an element.

What replacement really costs

People compare a repair quote against a showroom sticker, and that comparison is unfair to the repair. Replacement also involves:

  • Delivery and haul-away, sometimes bundled and sometimes not.
  • Installation — a water line for a refrigerator, a gas connection for a range, a duct check for a dryer, plumbing for a dishwasher.
  • Fit. A new appliance rarely occupies exactly the old footprint, and cabinet or countertop modifications are a real risk on built-ins.
  • Waiting. Delivery windows can be weeks on some models.
  • Starting a new bathtub curve. New appliances have early failures too, which is why the first year of warranty exists.

Add those and a $1,200 refrigerator is often $1,400 in practice. That shifts a borderline repair decision more often than people expect. The counterweight is that a new appliance restarts the whole clock and, on a genuinely old refrigerator or freezer, may cost meaningfully less to run — see what your old appliance costs to run for how to check that rather than assume it.

Working through a decision

Five questions, in order:

  1. What is the appliance's expected life, and where is this one on it? Under half: lean repair. Over 85 percent: lean replace.
  2. What is the actual quote? Not a guess — a written diagnosis. The diagnostic fee is what buys you this, and it is usually applied to the repair.
  3. Is the quote more than half the appliance's current value? Run it through the Blue Book.
  4. Is this the first significant failure, or the second in a short window?
  5. What does replacement actually cost, all in, including installation and disruption?

Where that lands you is usually clear. And if you need a diagnosis before you can answer question two, the directory lists repair businesses by state and city — a technician who will look at the machine and tell you honestly that it is not worth fixing has still earned the fee.
