Before a Hard Freeze: The Appliance Jobs Worth Doing First

Cold does not break appliances the way heat does. It breaks the things attached to them — supply lines, vent hoods, and anything in a room the furnace does not reach. All of it is an evening’s work, done early.

A summer heat wave attacks the appliance itself — the compressor, the coil, the duty cycle. A hard freeze mostly does not. It attacks the plumbing, the ducting and the room, and the appliance is simply the thing that stops working as a result.

That is good news, because plumbing, ducting and rooms are all things you can deal with on a Saturday for very little money. The catch is that almost none of it can be done during the cold snap: a frozen line has already done whatever damage it was going to do by the time you notice.

What cold actually does

Three separate mechanisms, and they explain nearly every winter call.

Water expands as it freezes. That is the whole story behind burst supply lines. The expansion happens inside a closed pipe with nowhere to go, and the split does not usually appear at the ice — it appears wherever the pipe was weakest. Worse, you often do not find out until it thaws, because a plug of ice is also a plug.

Rubber and plastic stiffen. A door gasket, a drain hose, a vent hood flap and a fill hose all get harder and less forgiving in the cold. Things that flexed happily in August crack in January.

Refrigeration controls read the room, not the food. This produces the call that sounds impossible — a freezer in a cold garage that stops freezing when the weather gets cold. It is a design limitation rather than a fault, and it has its own article: why your garage freezer thaws in winter.

The water lines are the whole problem

Three appliances in a typical house are fed by a pressurised water line, and every one of those lines is a candidate.

The refrigerator ice maker line is the most exposed and the least visible. It is usually quarter-inch plastic or copper tubing, it often runs a long way from wherever it was convenient to tap in, and on many houses part of that run is through a crawl space, a basement rim joist, an unheated utility room or the back of a garage. Follow yours all the way from the shutoff to the appliance and look at where it goes. If any of it is in unconditioned space, that is your weak point.

Washer fill hoses live in a laundry box which is frequently in an outside wall. The hoses themselves are only the last three feet; the risk is the pipe behind the box. A laundry room over a garage or in an addition built on a slab is the classic case.

The dishwasher supply is usually the safest of the three, coming off the kitchen sink deep inside the heated envelope. Under-sink cabinets on an exterior wall are the exception worth checking.

What actually helps, in rough order of value:

  • Know where every shutoff is, and turn each one off and on again while it is still warm. Valves that have not moved in eight years seize. If one will not turn, do not force it — a snapped stem on a live line is a much bigger problem than a stiff valve.
  • Open the cabinet doors under a sink on an exterior wall during a hard freeze so room air reaches the pipework.
  • Insulate the exposed run of the ice maker line with foam sleeve. A few dollars, twenty minutes.
  • Shut off and drain anything feeding a genuinely unheated space rather than trying to keep it warm. A garage refrigerator's ice maker is not worth the risk of the line that feeds it.
  • Heat tape is a real option for a run you cannot relocate, but it is an electrical product on a water line. Buy one rated for the pipe material, follow the instructions exactly, and if you are unsure, have an electrician do it.

Washers in an unheated room

The thing most people miss about a washing machine is that it never fully empties. Water sits in the pump, the drain hose loop, the sump and the folds of the door boot after every cycle, so a machine in a garage, a breezeway or an enclosed porch can freeze internally even though the supply is fine.

The symptoms are misleading. It will not fill, or it fills and will not drain, or it throws an error and stops — all of which read like a valve or pump fault. People order parts for faults that are actually ice.

If you think a machine has frozen:

  1. Do not run it. A pump impeller driven against an ice plug is how you turn a free problem into a parts problem.
  2. Warm the room, slowly. A space heater at a sensible distance, doors open, and time. Hours, not minutes.
  3. Never use an open flame or a heat gun on a pump housing, a hose or a plastic sump. All three are plastic and all three will deform or split.
  4. Check the pump filter once it has thawed — there is usually an access panel at the bottom front. Put a towel down first.
  5. Look underneath and behind for drips over the next day. A cracked pump housing or a split hose only shows itself once the ice is gone; if you find one, the leak guide covers finding the source.

If the room genuinely cannot be kept above freezing, winterise the machine the way you would in a vacation home: shut the valves, disconnect and drain the fill hoses, and run a drain-and-spin to clear what you can.

Dryer vents in winter

Dryer vents behave differently in the cold, and it catches people out every year.

Warm, wet exhaust meeting a duct that runs through a cold wall or an unheated attic condenses. That condensation soaks lint, the wet lint sticks to the duct wall instead of blowing out, and a vent that was fine in October is meaningfully restricted by January. The other version is at the far end: the exterior hood flap freezes shut, or a snow drift buries it.

Either shows up as a dryer that takes two cycles, or one that runs hot and shuts down partway through — the same symptoms as a failed thermostat, which is why people replace parts they did not need. Check airflow first: the airflow chain end to end, and a dryer that stops mid-cycle is very often the same cause.

Two winter-specific fixes worth doing in November: clean the duct before heating season rather than in spring, and go outside and physically work the hood flap to confirm it swings freely. If the run is long and uninsulated, insulating it reduces the condensation that starts the whole process.

The rest of the house

Smaller items, all quick.

  • Gas ranges and dryers. Cold itself does not bother them, but persistent yellow, uneven or slow-lighting burners are a port or igniter issue rather than a weather one — clean the ports.
  • Garbage disposals under a sink on an exterior wall can freeze, and running one with ice in the chamber is a good way to trip the overload or jam it. If it hums and will not turn, the hex wrench in the base is the first move.
  • Refrigerator sweating. Winter is when people run humidifiers, and a cold surface in a humid room condenses. Usually environment rather than fault — see exterior condensation.
  • A vacation home, or a house you are leaving for the season, needs the full treatment rather than this one — see leaving the house empty.

The weekend before the cold

  1. Find and exercise every appliance shutoff valve: laundry box, dishwasher supply, refrigerator line, and the main.
  2. Trace the ice maker line end to end and insulate or drain anything in unconditioned space.
  3. Clean the dryer duct from the machine to the exterior hood, and confirm the flap swings freely.
  4. Decide what happens to any washer in an unheated room — heat it, or winterise it.
  5. Check fill hoses for stiffness, bulges or rust at the couplings while you are back there.
  6. Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls when the hard nights arrive.

The whole list is an afternoon and the cost of a foam pipe sleeve. Compare that to a split supply line behind a wall, which is not an appliance repair at all — see the failures that damage the house rather than the appliance.

When it is a real fault

Cold explains a lot in January, but not everything, and treating a genuine failure as a weather problem wastes a week. Call someone when:

  • A washer still will not fill or drain after the room has been warm for a full day.
  • You find water under a machine after a thaw — that is a split component, not ice.
  • A dryer runs long or overheats after the duct is confirmed clear from the machine to the hood.
  • A refrigerator or freezer in heated space is drifting warm. That is not weather — start with the not-cooling walkthrough.
  • Anything gas smells, lights unevenly at more than one burner, or produces soot.

And if the machine that froze is old and the quote is large, run it through the Appliance Blue Book before authorising anything — a hard freeze is often the event that finishes off a machine that was already near the end. When you do need someone, the directory lists repair businesses by state and city.
