Preventive parts replacement is mostly a bad idea. Appliance components do not have a service interval, they have a failure distribution, and swapping a working part for a new one usually just resets a clock that had years left on it while introducing a fresh chance to install something wrong.
There are exceptions, and they share a specific shape: the part is cheap, the failure it prevents is expensive or dangerous, and the timing is predictable enough to act on. Six of them are worth doing. The list at the end covers the ones that are not.
When replacing early makes sense
Three conditions, all of which must hold:
- The part costs a small fraction of what its failure costs. A $15 hose against a flooded floor is the archetype.
- It degrades predictably with time rather than failing randomly. Rubber and flexible materials qualify. Electronics do not.
- You can do it yourself, or it can be done during a visit you were making anyway. Paying a trip charge to pre-emptively replace a $20 part is not preventive maintenance, it is a hobby.
1. Washer fill hoses
Cost: a few dollars each for braided stainless. Interval: roughly every five years. Prevents: the most damaging appliance failure a home can have.
Washer fill hoses are permanently pressurised whenever the supply valves are open, which in most houses is always. Rubber hoses age, the reinforcement inside degrades, and when one lets go it does so at full mains pressure with nobody home. There is no comparable failure in the appliance world — a burst hose can put thousands of gallons through a floor.
Replace them with braided stainless steel hoses, hand-tight plus about a quarter turn with a wrench, and check for weeping after the first fill. Note the date on a piece of tape on the hose so future-you knows.
While you are back there, check the drain hose is properly secured to the standpipe and cannot jump out. A drain hose that comes loose mid-cycle empties the tub onto the floor, which is the cheaper version of the same disaster. If the machine is also leaking from somewhere you cannot identify, deal with that at the same time.
The best moment to do all of this is when the machine is already pulled out — during a move, an installation, or a repair visit.
2. The dryer duct
Cost: modest for rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. Interval: replace foil duct now; inspect metal duct annually. Prevents: long cycles, thermal fuse failures, and a real fire risk.
Flexible foil duct is the default in a lot of houses and it is the worst option available. It crushes behind the machine, sags between supports, and its ridged interior catches lint at every corrugation. Semi-rigid aluminium is better; rigid metal duct is best.
This one is not really a part replacement, it is an upgrade you should do once. Combine it with a proper vent cleaning — duct, wall run, and exterior hood — and confirm the hood flap opens freely and air comes out with force. The consequences of not doing it show up as a dryer that takes two cycles, and as thermal fuses that blow because the machine cannot shed its heat.
Shorter and straighter beats longer and bendier every time. If your run has more than a couple of elbows, that is worth solving structurally rather than cleaning more often.
3. Refrigerator water filter and supply line
Cost: $25 to $60 for a filter. Interval: about every six months. Prevents: weak dispensers, small ice cubes, and inlet valve strain.
The filter is a genuine consumable with a stated interval, and it is the most commonly ignored one. A clogged filter restricts flow, which produces exactly the symptoms people mistake for a failing dispenser or a failing ice maker. Replacing it is a twist and a flush, no tools.
The supply line is the other half. If your refrigerator is fed by a saddle valve clamped onto a copper pipe — a small brass fitting with a needle that pierces the pipe — that is an old and failure-prone arrangement, and it is worth replacing with a proper tee and shutoff the next time a plumber is in the house. Braided stainless line to the appliance is better than the plastic tubing that ships with some units.
One caution: refrigerator filters are model-specific and the aftermarket is uneven. Check your model at one of the suppliers in our refrigerator parts directory and buy something that actually fits.
4. Refrigerator and freezer door gaskets
Cost: roughly $20 to $140 depending on the appliance. Interval: when the dollar-bill test fails in multiple places. Prevents: continuous over-running, temperature drift, and frost.
This one is conditional rather than scheduled — do not replace a gasket that seals. Test it instead: close the door on a dollar bill and pull. Real drag means a seal. If it slides out freely in several places around the door, the gasket has taken a set and is costing you continuously, because the compressor is making up for the leak every hour of every day.
A refrigerator with a poor seal also frosts, sweats, and runs warm at the shelf nearest the leak — which is often diagnosed as something much more serious. Before anyone quotes you for a unit that never stops running, check the seals.
Gaskets are usually a straightforward homeowner job: they press or screw into a channel around the door. Warm the new one first so it relaxes into shape.
5. Range hood filters
Cost: $15 to $55 for a charcoal filter; mesh grease filters are washable and free to maintain. Interval: wash mesh monthly; replace charcoal every six to twelve months. Prevents: a hood that does nothing.
Mesh grease filters are not consumables — wash them. Charcoal filters, used on recirculating hoods that have no duct to the outside, absolutely are. A saturated charcoal filter does not filter, and there is no symptom other than a kitchen that smells like whatever you cooked last week.
If the hood is weak even with clean filters, the problem is downstream — damper, duct, or blower. The airflow guide covers it, and a blower motor is $60 to $260 if it comes to that.
6. Dryer drum rollers, belt and idler
Cost: $25 to $80 for a kit. Interval: at the first squeal, or when the machine is already open. Prevents: a second teardown.
This is the one entry on the list that is not really preventive — it is about batching. Getting to a dryer's drum rollers means taking the machine substantially apart. The rollers, the belt and the idler pulley all wear together, they are all cheap, and they are all behind the same panels.
So the rule is: if you are in there for one of them, do all of them. A kit costs $25 to $80 and saves you doing the whole teardown again in a year when the next one starts squealing. The same logic applies when a technician is already inside the machine — ask.
What not to replace early
These come up and they are not worth it:
- Control boards. Expensive, model-specific, non-returnable, and they fail randomly rather than progressively. There is no preventive case at all. See when a control board quote means buy a new appliance.
- Motors and pumps. These generally give warning — noise, slow drain, weak spin — and they last long enough that swapping a healthy one is pure waste.
- Heating elements and igniters. Cheap, yes, but they fail cleanly and diagnose easily, and a new one is not more reliable than a working old one. Fix when it fails.
- Thermostats and sensors. Same reasoning. Diagnose, then replace.
- Compressors and anything in the sealed system. Never. This is licensed work and there is no preventive version of it.
- Anything on an appliance that is nearly done. If the machine is past about 85 percent of its expected life, preventive spending is money into a machine you are about to replace. Check where yours sits with the Blue Book, and read which appliances are worth repairing past ten years before you spend on an old one.
The pattern is consistent: replace things that degrade with time and cause disproportionate damage when they let go. Everything else, fix when it breaks. And put the six above on the maintenance calendar so they actually happen.
