The Early Warnings: What an Appliance Does Before It Fails

Very little breaks without warning. The trouble is that the warnings are quiet, they arrive months ahead of the failure, and every one of them is easy to live with right up until the day it is not.

Ask anyone whose dryer died last week and they will tell you it happened suddenly. Ask what it had been doing for the previous three months and you often get: well, it had been taking two cycles, and there was a squeak, and it smelled hot sometimes.

That is not a criticism of anybody. Appliance warnings are quiet and gradual, and gradual is precisely what human beings are bad at noticing. A noise that arrives overnight gets attention. The same noise arriving over four months becomes the noise your dryer makes.

What follows is a list of the things worth noticing, sorted by what they usually mean and how quickly they need action.

Sound

Sound is the earliest and most reliable warning an appliance gives, because most of what fails is mechanical and mechanical things get louder before they stop. The useful question is not “is it noisy” but “is it noisier than it was, and does the noise change with what the machine is doing.”

  • A squeal or chirp that tracks drum speed on a dryer. Rollers, idler pulley or the belt. This is the single best example of a cheap warning: the parts are inexpensive, the job is straightforward, and ignoring it eventually gives you a seized roller and a shredded belt. Dryer squealing covers which is which.
  • A rumble or grinding on spin from a washer, especially one that rises and falls with the spin speed. Tub bearings. This is the failure that usually ends a front loader, and it gets louder over many months. Worth diagnosing early, because the decision it leads to is repair-or-replace, not a small repair — vibration and drum noise is the starting point.
  • A click, then a hum for a second or two, then silence — repeating every few minutes. That is a compressor trying and failing to start, and it is a start relay or the compressor itself. This one is not a slow warning; it means the refrigerator is not cooling right now.
  • A grinding or rattling only during drain on a washer or dishwasher. Something in the pump. Often a coin, a hair clip or a piece of glass, and clearing it is free. Left alone it wears the impeller and then you are buying a pump.
  • A buzz or hammering only while filling. Water inlet valve, or water hammer in the plumbing. Cheap now, and a valve that fails open is a leak.
  • A fan that has become loud, ticking or intermittent in a refrigerator or freezer. Evaporator or condenser fan. Its failure produces warm-fridge symptoms that look like something far more expensive — refrigerator noises, decoded.

A useful habit: once a season, stand in the laundry room for one full cycle without your phone. You will hear things you have been ignoring for months.

Time

Cycle-time creep is the most dependable early warning there is, and almost nobody tracks it, because a cycle that grows by two minutes a month is invisible.

  • A dryer that now needs two cycles. Nearly always airflow — a duct, a hood, or a lint path — and it is the most consequential item in this article because restricted airflow also raises operating temperature. The airflow chain is worth walking end to end the first time you notice.
  • A dishwasher whose cycle keeps getting longer. Many machines extend a cycle when the water is not reaching temperature, so a lengthening run time can mean a failing heater or a supply that is not hot enough. The same element usually drives the dry cycle, so dishes coming out wet and a lengthening run are often the same fault.
  • A refrigerator compressor that never stops running. Put your ear to it at different times of day. A healthy unit cycles. One that runs continuously has lost its margin, and the usual causes are coils, seals or airflow before anything expensive — running constantly.
  • An oven that takes noticeably longer to preheat. A weakening element or igniter, or a door seal that no longer seals.
  • A washer that has started adding time mid-cycle or repeatedly re-balancing. Load distribution, level, or suspension — long washer cycles works through the causes.

You do not need instruments for any of this. You need to have noticed once what normal was.

Water, frost and residue

These are the warnings that look like housekeeping and are actually diagnosis.

  • Any new damp. A drip you wipe up twice is a leak you have accepted. Find where it comes from before it finds your floor — the failures that damage the house is the reason to take this one seriously.
  • A refrigerator drip pan that is suddenly full, or water under the crisper drawers. Usually a blocked defrost drain, which is a cheap fix early and a mess later.
  • Frost where there was none — on freezer walls, on packages, or a coating on the back panel. On an auto-defrost unit that is a defrost system fault, not a maintenance failure. See frost buildup.
  • Film on glassware or residue on clothes that has appeared recently. Something changed: detergent, water temperature, a spray arm, a filter, or your water supply. What your water is doing to your appliances covers the input side.
  • Clothes coming out wetter than they used to from a washer. Spin, drain, or suspension — and it shows up as a dryer complaint, which is why people replace the wrong machine.

Smell and heat

Smell is the warning with the widest range: some of it is trivial and some of it means stop.

Trivial to routine: musty laundry (biofilm in a front loader — a cleaning routine, not a fault), a refrigerator that smells (usually food or a blocked drain), a dishwasher that smells (the filter, nine times out of ten).

Take seriously: a cabinet that is hot to the touch when it did not use to be, a dryer that makes the room hot, or a laundry area that smells faintly of scorched lint. All three are heat that is not leaving, which is airflow, and airflow is the one maintenance item with a genuine safety dimension — keeping the duct clear from the machine to the exterior hood is why a burning smell from a dryer deserves an immediate check rather than a note to self.

The stop-now list

Everything above is a warning you can act on this week. These are not. If you see one of these, stop using the appliance and disconnect it.

  • A burning, hot-plastic or electrical smell from any appliance. Unplug it. Do not run it again to see whether it does it twice.
  • Visible sparking or arcing. In a microwave this may be as simple as a damaged waveguide cover, but it is still a stop — see microwave sparking.
  • A plug or outlet that is discoloured, melted or hot. That is a wiring problem, and it belongs to an electrician, not an appliance technician.
  • A breaker that trips repeatedly. The breaker is doing its job. Replacing it or resetting it repeatedly is not a fix — repeated trips point at a real fault.
  • Water at or near an electrical connection. Kill the circuit at the panel first, then deal with the water.
  • Any smell of gas. Do not operate switches or appliances. Leave the building, then call your gas utility or the emergency number from outside. This is not an appliance repair call.

Today, this week, this season

A rough sort for everything else:

  • Today: a compressor clicking and failing to start; any active leak; a refrigerator or freezer drifting warm with food in it; a dryer that runs unusually hot.
  • This week: a new mechanical noise under load; cycle times that have clearly grown; frost on an auto-defrost unit; a drain that has become slow; a door that no longer seals.
  • This season: a squeak that has not changed in months; a filter or gasket that is tired; residue and film complaints; a level check; the coil and duct cleaning that the maintenance calendar puts on a schedule.

Keep a two-line record

The last habit, and it is the one that pays at the worst moment. When you notice something, write two lines somewhere you will find them: the date, and what you noticed. “March 4 — dryer squeaking on startup, stops after a minute.”

Three reasons this is worth the thirty seconds. It converts gradual into visible, which is the entire problem this article is about. It gives a technician a history, which is the most useful thing you can hand over — preparing for a repair visit covers the rest of that handover. And if the appliance is in warranty, a dated record of when a symptom started is exactly the evidence a claim turns on.

None of this makes an appliance last forever. What it does is move the moment you find out from the day it dies to some months earlier, when the part is cheap, the machine is not in pieces, and you have time to run the numbers through the Appliance Blue Book and decide calmly whether this one is worth fixing at all.
